The Center for Research and Documentation on Japan's War Responsibility (JWRC) was established in April 1993. We are dedicated to fulfilling Japan's responsibility to Asians victimized by Japan during WWII. The JWRC is supported by its membership of individuals, who range from historians, legal experts, and writers to conscientious citizens. Since the JWRC was established, it has been publishing Kikan Senso Sekinin Kenkyu (Quarterly Journal: "Study on War Responsibility"), in which certain study results are made public. One remarkable achievement of JWRC was the outcome of its investigation of the "Comfort Women" issue. This was submitted to the Japanese Government in 1993, and as a direct consequence the government was forced to admit for the first time that these women, who suffered at Japanese military Comfort Stations, were coerced into sexual slavery.
The JWRC has also submitted reports and the results of an investigation of the "Comfort Women" issue to the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations, thus contributing to discussion and understanding of the subject among members of the committee. Further, the JWRC cooperated with the International Commission of Jurists' Ms. Radhika Coomaraswamy on her mission to investigate the "Comfort Women". Her report was later accepted by the Human Rights Committee. The JWRC collected 61,852 signatures demanding that the Government of Japan take action according to the six recommendations made in her report, as part of the "One Million Signatures: Accept the UN Recommendations!" movement.
The JWRC is dedicated to carrying on with this work of revealing the crimes committed by the Japanese during the war and fulfilling our responsibility to war victims. To do so, we need your support. Membership is open to everybody.
